Re:Vinyl

Welcome to the Vinyl Revival and the anti-gatekeeping starter kit for all things vinyl.

Duration: 7 weeks

Completed using Procreate and Adobe Illustrator

This is student work completed at Cornish College of the Arts

This work is one piece of a collaborative series meant to teach a particular demographic about a specific topic. The work shown here are components that I completed solely. Final outputs for this project could include printed and digital materials and was heavily informed by demographic and topic research.

For this assignment my group chose to create a printed starter kit to instruct our demographic on how to get into vinyl record collection and use. Our target demographic was anyone who is looking to get around the gatekeeping around vinyl records, mainly those ages 20-30. The piece that I mainly focused on was an interactive timeline on the history of vinyl featuring illustrations and text design. The illustrations follow the progression of the technology associated with playing vinyl records. The fonts were specifically selected as they align with key years in what is considered the “vinyl revival” of the 20th and 21st centuries. The pattern that I created to be used in the background is a nod to the popularity of vinyl in pop culture in the 1970s.

These page spreads map the history of the vinyl record and its subsequent influence in pop culture and music media. The book is designed to be presented in print media, with the pages each appearing in different dimensions. When folded, the illustrations come together to form the cover image as shown at the top of the page.

Record Sleeve Inner Panels

The complete Re:Vinyl Starter Kit comes in the format of a 12” record sleeve with the printed materials arranged in the dual sleeve pockets. These typographic designs are featured on the inside of the sleeve and serve as a sort of dictionary of vinyl- and record-related terms for new vinyl enthusiasts.
